The TIME 100 reader’s poll is closing in three days, and 2NE1’s Lee “CL” Chaerin is leading the pack. But not by much.
As noted by YG Entertainment’s official blog YG-Life, CL is currently leading in the “2015 Most Influential People in the World” poll. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin is now less than one percent behind the 2NE1 rapper.
“Russia’s bellicose President has acquired notoriety abroad and adulation at home thanks to his rumored support for Ukrainian rebels and his annexation of Crimea last year,” wrote Time contributor Sam Frizell.
“He continues to challenge European authority in the former Soviet states, and has stood by Syrian President Bashar Assad as the rest of the world has condemned his conduct in the civil war. Putin outpaces other world leaders like Pope Francis, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel in the TIME 100 poll.”
As seen on Twitter with the hashtag #TIME100, the poll has become a battle in the final days of voting, and CL is notably still leading other popular pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Katy Berry, Beyonce and Taylor Swift.
CL’s nomination seems perfect for her upcoming American solo debut, where she’s enlisting the help of talent manager Scooter Braun to further the gap between K-pop and the American public.
Last month, the annual Ultra Music Festival (UMF) took place in Miami, Florida. The event marked the first major music stage appearance for CL when she made a guest appearance during Skrillex’s set Sunday night.
“I feel like it’s all about good music at the end of the day,” said CL to Complex magazine in February.
“It’s not like I’m a rookie. I have been doing this for a long time in Asia. It’s just a new market. I have to have good music, so I’m just focusing on that. There are so many Korean people here, and Chinese and Japanese, but they don’t have one pop artist that they can look up to. That’s kind of sad. I wish I could be that person for them to be proud of.”
